6. I’m Not a Nintendo (mp3)

About: Right when we finished recording, Drew Gibson of Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk (BBDDM) expressed his awkwardness with the whole process: “It just seems selfish to play for just us”, he admitted. His confession reverberated within the unfinished basement — flooded with construction lights and consumer grade cameras. The band (consisting presently of Drew Gibson and Oscar Allen) took the time out of their bloated Northwest tour schedule to join us for an intimate recording session. And while at the time it may have felt awkward and forced, the end result is a genuine performance by two individuals who are making music for all the right reasons.

BBDDM have been touring for the past two and a half years now. They’ve played with as many as 8 members and recorded enough material to rival Robert Pollard in his old age. The music they make is simultaneously dynamic, nostalgic, and resonating. This set is best described as spastic. One song you hear a hook that triggers memories to your childhood, the next track sounds like a wash of noise and distortion as Godzilla pillages another city.

It’s this childlike accessibility that makes BBDDM enthralling. At the end of the day, Drew and Oscar are making songs they want to make for themselves, and for no one else. It’s selfish for all the right reasons. They created a fort out of Star Wars blankets and Jurassic Park action figures and continued to play their music. Drew, rocking back and forth while he delicately fingerpicks on his Squire guitar, while Oscar rocks out on his bastardized drum-kit doing his best impression of Animal from The Muppets (and sporting an awesome Mickey Mouse sweater).

Baby Birds is a perfect illustration of a band that doesn’t get their due. Here’s Filmed in Stereo’s attempt to best remedy this. If you can, make it out to one of their shows and buy a 7”, or even chat with the guys. They won’t eat you (though they claim to have eaten their third band member so beware). Grab a root beer and some pepperoni pizza and enjoy this “Kind Christmas Tree” music that will sonically take you aboard The Magic School Bus. Our greatest thanks go out to BBDDM for spoiling us with this performance.

CHOMP WOMP!

About: handfuls of microscopic crafted worlds, shaped with tiny precision. Layers of decaying feedback, sparse glockenspiel and tape samples weave a dark and dense tapestry of sound while deep brooding vocals sit atop songs with deceptive timing, subtle electronic stutters, and thunderous and organic drumming. Banjo driven four to the floor stompers yield to velvety acoustic guitar and spacious instrumentals laden with sampled americana.
